The first CCSIP Call for Proposals

Launch of First Canada-California Strategic Innovation Partnership (CCSIP)
Call for Proposals for Collaborative Initiatives between Canada and California

The first CCSIP Call for Proposals is now closed; many thanks to all applicants.

The CCSIP Steering Committee, together with the University of California, participating Canadian universities and ISTPCanada, launched in December 2008 a university-led Call for Proposals for Collaborative Initiatives between Canada and California.

These organizations are allocating $2 million to stimulate the development of novel models of collaboration (such as the establishment of bilateral collaborations, R&D consortia, the structuring of Canada-California Centres of Excellence and/or the creation of new working relations between university systems), capitalize on the complementary strengths of Canada and California and catalyze innovative multi–campus and multi–disciplinary research and educational cooperation between the two jurisdictions. In support of these objectives:

  • Proposals must focus on bilateral partnership development activities (as opposed to research projects)
  • Collaborative initiatives that engage multiple partners from academia, industry, research labs or centres and other innovation agencies are particularly encouraged
  • ‘Business as usual’, single researcher-to-researcher collaborations are not eligible for funding under this CFP
  • Bilateral teams are encouraged to put forward short proposals for collaborative initiatives that address key priorities shared by California and Canada, capitalize on the complementary strengths of both jurisdictions and emphasize delivery to the market place.  Financial support is available for the:

    • Conduct of focused round tables, workshops and/or symposia that lead to novel methods or approaches of research collaboration
    • Development and delivery of a detailed R&D business plans for early-stage bilateral initiatives that help to propel the concept to the next stage of development

    Focus of Proposals:

Drawing on the themes of the 2008 CCSIP Summit on October 27, 2008, teams may propose bilateral initiatives in areas that include, but are not limited to: Carbon Capture and Sequestration, Green IT, Infectious Diseases, Next-Generation Digital Media and Sustainable Biofuels. Please note: these themes represent potential topics for consideration; CFP applicants are welcome to propose novel bilateral initiatives outside of these areas.

    Deadlines:

    • Letters of Intent: February 27, 2009; 2PM PST, UCOP and ISTPCanada will announce all selected Letters on March 16, 2009
    • Requested Proposals: May 15, 2009, 12PM PDT, 3PM EDT
    • Funding Decisions: The CCSIP Steering Committee, together with UCOP and ISTPCanada, expect to announce funding for all successful initiatives by August 4, 2009
